The “1873” Sculpture is located in Plaza Ramón E. Betances in Cabo Rojo. Founded on December 23, 2005. It represents the breaking of the chains of slavery. In this same square, Dr. Ramón Emeterio Betances bought slave children before entering the church, then baptized them and freed them. This was because children who were baptized were sold at a higher price than those who were not yet baptized.
