The Plaza Artesanal Rolando Ortiz Medina was inaugurated on July 14, 2010 in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, and will be the headquarters of the Municipal Office for Tourism Development. The Plaza was built to establish and create a place where Artisans can be in a suitable environment that encourages inventiveness and artisanal imagination. Also to provide citizens and visitors with an accessible area where they can enjoy and mingle in a cultural environment and acquire Puerto Rican crafts. This beautiful Plaza will be the starting and finishing point of the tourist excursions offered in the city of Cabo Rojo.
The Artisanal Plaza is made up of 20 artisanal guarikitenes*, where 20 artisans certified by Industrial Development will be exhibiting and selling their crafts. It has a Craft Gallery where Puerto Rican crafts will be exhibited.
*Guarikitén Artesanal, will mean the space that will be assigned to the Artisan. It is a Taíno word that is defined as the bed built of sticks and reeds, covered by leaves and palms that were used to collect the grated yucca.
